Attribution describes a path. Incrementality answers the harder question: what happened because of the investment that would not have happened otherwise?
That distinction matters when channels overlap, algorithms optimize toward people already likely to convert, and short-term efficiency can disguise long-term waste.
Make lift part of the system
Incrementality should not be reserved for a quarterly study. Geo experiments, holdouts, brand-lift signals, and causal models can create a continuous view of contribution across the media portfolio.
Optimize for the changed outcome
When investment decisions are tied to causal lift, teams can redirect budget toward audiences, narratives, and channels that genuinely move the growth curve—not simply claim credit for it.
